LA RENUNCIA DEL PAPA
Benedicto XVI anunció
hoy oficialmente que renuncia al pontificado por su "edad avanzada" a
partir del próximo 28 de febrero.
"Después
de haber examinado ante Dios reiteradamente mi conciencia, he llegado a la
certeza de que, por la edad avanzada, ya no tengo fuerzas para ejercer
adecuadamente el ministerio petrino", dijo el Papa en un sorpresivo
anuncio durante el consistorio para fijar las fechas de canonización de tres
causas.
El
pontífice, que cumplirá 86 años en abril, afirmó que "en el mundo de hoy
(...), es necesario también el vigor tanto del cuerpo como del espíritu, vigor
que, en los últimos meses, ha disminuido en mí de tal forma que he de reconocer
mi incapacidad para ejercer bien el ministerio que me fue encomendado".
Benedicto
XVI, que comenzó su pontificado el 19 de abril de 2005, dejará vacante la
misión de liderar la Iglesia Católica el 28 de febrero próximo, tras lo que
deberá ser convocado el cónclave para la elección del nuevo Sumo Pontífice.
Nacido
en Marktl am Inn, en Alemania, el 16 de abril de 1927, es el pontífice número
265 de la Iglesia Católica, obispo de Roma y séptimo Jefe del Estado Vaticano.
